در تمامی فرآیندهایی که برای حفظ رشد و تولیدمثل گیاه انجام می‌شود، پتاسیم نقش اساسی دارد. کمبود پتاسیم در گیاه موجب کاهش مقاومت گیاه به خشکی، غرق‌آبی و دماهای بالا و پایین می‌شود. به‌ طور کلی علائم کمبود بصورت کلروز در حاشیه برگ‌ها و به دنبال آن نکروز بافت گیاه شروع می‌شود. پتاسیم تاُثیر بسزایی در کاهش بیماریهای انگلی و افزایش مقاومت گیاه در برابر بیماریهای قارچی دارد. همچنین استفاده از کود پتاسیمی در مزارع گندم و جو باعث کاهش کپک پودری و افزایش عملکرد میشود. در مزارع گوجه فرنگی نیز کاهش بیماری قارچی با تغذیه متعادل و کافی پتاسیم اثبات شده است.

Also, the use of potassium fertilizer in wheat and barley fields reduces powdery mildew and increases yield. In tomato fields, the reduction of fungal diseases with balanced and sufficient potassium nutrition has also been proven.
