پتاسیم یکی از عناصر ضروری برای رشد و توسعه گیاهان است. پتاسيم خاك از نظر سهل الوصول بودن برای گیاهان به چهار شكل: محلول، تبادلي، غيرتبادلي و ساختماني تقسيم مي‌شود. پتاسیم در خاک به دلیل جذب توسط گیاه، شستشو و فرسایش خاک کاهش می‌یابد ، لذا پتاسيم ساختماني در شرايط كمبود پتاسيم اهميت ويژه‎ا‎‏ي دارد. فسفر تاثیر بسزایی بر رشد ریشه‌ها دارد و برای توسعه و رشد آن‌ها مورد نیاز است. به همین دلیل بهتر است که کود فسفر قبل از کاشت محصول و یا در زمان کاشت آن‌ها مورد استفاده قرار بگیرد.
